Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Eyeshadow Palette Review, Swatches, Photos

by Tavia

Hello beauties!

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics was for me one of the highlights of holiday 2016 collections. It’s a new and permanent eyeshadow palette, featuring 12 shades, joining the famous Urban Decay Naked family. Once you open the palette you will meet the 12 new neutral shades, with one of them in a shimmery finish or a demi-matte as the brand describes it, while the rest are all mattes.

The shades in Naked Ultimate Basics are neutral enough for everything from cool skin tones to olive complexions to darker skin. If you’ve never tried our matte shadows, you’ll be blown away by how different they are. Other mattes can be “skippy,” uneven on application or difficult to blend. But EVERY shade in Naked Ultimate Basics features our proprietary Pigment Infusion System™, which gives the formula its velvety texture, rich color, serious staying power and blendability. Achieve the perfect application every time for a matte look that radiates.

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Eyeshadow Palette ($54.00 / 236.00 Lei for 0.48 oz.) was for me not the best of Urban Decay’s Naked palettes but not the worst either…maybe something in between as regarding the quality and eyeshadow performance.

The packaging was the thing that really took my breath away when I saw the promo photos and it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at. I imagine rays of sun bursting out of this palette and I absolutely adore the golden, bronze reflexes it creates depending on the angle the light hits.

All the swatches were made on bare skin without any eyeshadow primer. I just wanted to see how they would behave applied on bare skin, because over an eyeshadow primer the pigmentation would definitely change.

Blow Eyeshadow was officially described as a light nude demi-matte. I see it as a very light, beige with warm undertones and a pearl shimmery finish. It had a good color payoff, good pigmentation and a super soft and smooth texture. It was easily blendable and adheres well onto the skin. I like that I can use this shade as a highlighter as well, on the top of my cheek bones or under my brow bone and inner corner of the lid. I had around eight hours wear with this formula without any fall out.

Nudie Eyeshadow is officially described as soft pink-nude matte. It’s a light to medium peachy-nude-beige with warm undertones and a soft matte finish. It had a smooth but thinner texture and was easily blendable but prone to sheering. It delivers semi-opaque color coverage and has no fall out during the application. It’s a shade that’s close to my skin tone so I like to use it as a color transition, to blend in the crease or for a natural makeup look. I had around eight hours wear with this formula without creasing.

Commando Eyeshadow is officially described as a light taupe-brown matte. It looks like a light-medium taupe-beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a sheer to medium coverage with a smooth texture that was easily blendable. It adheres well onto the skin without any fall out during the application. I had about eight hours wear.

Tempted Eyeshadow is officially described as a pale brown matte. I see it as a light to medium taupe brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a semi-opaque color payoff but the formula felt dry and a bit dusty. It didn’t adhere so well onto the skin and looked a bit patchy once applied. It had around seven hours wear before it started to show sings of fading.

Instinct Eyeshadow is described as a medium pink-taupe matte. It is a medium pink-mauve with slightly cool undertones and a matte finish. It delivers a semi-sheer color coverage and was hardly blendable. It was prone to sheer out when I apply it and blended easily. I had six hours wear with this formula.

Lethal Eyeshadow is described as a reddish brown matte. It’s a medium-dark chocolate brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a semi-opaque color coverage with a formula that felt a bit powdery. It can be blended fairly well, but not as easily and evenly as I’d like to. It takes a few layers of color to increase the opacity up to a full coverage. It wore on me for about eight hours.

Pre-Game Eyeshadow is officially described as a pale yellow matte. I say it’s a light yellow with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a decent color payoff, with a sheer-to-medium coverage. The texture was smooth, soft but felt a bit dusty. It adheres well onto the skin and it’s easily blendable. It wore off after 7 hours.

Extra Bitter Eyeshadow is described as burnt orange matte. It’s a medium copper-brown with orange undertones and a matte finish. The texture was very smooth, soft and easily blendable without kicking off too much excess powder. It has a great color payoff, rich and pigmented so it was very easy to apply and work with it. Easily blendable, adheres well onto the skin, no fall out or creasing so it’s by far one of the best quality eyeshadows from this palette. I had a bit over eight hours wear with this formula.

Faith Eyeshadow is defined as a medium warm brown matte. In my opinion is a medium chocolate brown with yellow undertones and a matte finish. The texture felt very soft, silky and the consistency was smooth and fine to the touch. It had a good pigmentation and blended out easily. It gave me a little over seven hours and a half wear.

Lockout Eyeshadow is described as a rich neutral brown matte. It’s a dark, deep brown with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It’s just a bit darker compared to Faith but it didn’t apply so evenly and easily. It had a sheer to easily buildable medium coverage with a soft, silky texture. It was easily blendable and gave me around eight hours wear.

Magnet Eyeshadow is officially defined as smoky gray matte. It is a medium-dark mauvy-gray with a soft matte finish. It has a very thin, dry and dusty texture and it was really hard to apply it and make it look evenly. On the pan it shows a bit of sparkle but it isn’t noticeable when swatched or applied on the lid. It looks patchy and uneven so an eyeshadow primer it’s definitely a must. Even when I wore it, I preferred combining it with other shades, applied over a more darker color so it wouldn’t look so uneven on its own. I had almost seven hours wear with this shade. For me personally it was the most difficult shade to work with from this palette. The quality was really disappointing.

Blackjack Eyeshadow is named a warm black matte. I see it as a dark black-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a smooth and soft texture with a medium opacity. Even though the shade looks intense in the pan, in doesn’t transfer into a rich and fully pigmented one. It took me several layers of color to make it look even and hide that patchiness so I can’t say it was very easy to work with or easily blendable. Definitely a primer would make things better for this one as well and facilitate the application. I had around eight hours wear without any noticeable fall out.

A couple of really patchy mattes there. This palette does not appeal to me – very warm and a couple of the shades look too similar to each other. The packaging is beautiful, but I would value more attention being paid to the shade range and quality.
